Description: U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1880 HUNTING KNIFE, INDIAN WARS, RIA, #1689 WITH SHEATH Steel spear-point blade. A central median separated a fuller running almost the full length of the upper half of the blade, while the lower half is flat, tapering straight from the median ridge to the sharpend edge. Heavy brass guard with two rear curving quillons. The blade itself is affixed to the guard by a groove along the full width of the leading edge of the guard and by two steel pins passing through the bolster. The forward pin extended slightly beyond the bolster on both sides to lock the knife in the scabbard. The blade has been slightly sharpened with no rust or pitting. The opposite end of the bolster formed a socket holding a turned and varnished ribbed oak grip. A series of groves provided a secure grip for the hand. No cracks or damage to the oak handle. The brass bolster is stamped “U.S. SPRINGFIELD, and depicts the serial number of “1689” No rust or pitting. There is no evidence of excessive sharpening on the blade. The scabbard is made of heavy black leather scabbard has tight stitching and displays well. "R.I.A" (Rock island Arsenal) is marked on the brass belt hook. The hook is attached with three brass rivets. Scabbards for the model 1890 were made only by Rock Island Arsenal. This 1890 scabbard was nearly identical to the altered type with two exceptions. These scabbards were newly manufactured, so they did not exhibit the third line of stitching on the extension which were a characteristic of altered scabbards. Likewise, the top of the leather extension was quite rounded, as opposed to the square corners and slightly curved top of the severed belt loop. Rock island produced five hundred 1890 patterns during 1893 The brass components of the knife and scabbard are in an uncleaned state with original patina. The back of the leather scabbard suspension shows wear and use but it is complete and intact. This Indian Wars Hunting Knife will be a nice addition to any Indian War militaria collection.
