The 1909 Indian was the last year the Indian cent was struck and the first and the only year where the Indian cents were struck from a master hub with the date included, giving the year the distinction of the possibility of (double die) mint errors. This piece is an example of a DDO (double die obverse) that consists of doubling of the designer's initial "L" on the ribbon, which appears as a smaller L slightly above the base of the primary L. These are scarce and a popular mint error variety for Indian cent collectors. This is a beautiful and appealing example to be sure.Just to explain better the terminology of peripheral toning, it is used to describe when a coins unique color characteristics look a certain way when viewing it head on but then, takes on completely different color characteristics as light hits it from different angles, typically the colors change based on the unique toning of the piece.
