Research discloses that Newell began his work as a photographer in Concord, New Hampshire in 1856. Six months later he moved to Portsmouth. He was one of 13 children of a prominent farmer. Newell is mentioned in his role as an event photographer, in an 1893 publication of the Grand Army of the Republic (Portsmouth Chapter). This photograph measures about 5.25 x 7.25 inches. The photo is in excellent condition (see scans).
