Description: This fun pattern is EASY PEASY to make! It was a very popular style in the 1890s, the Victorian Era. Ladies sewed all the time, and had lots of empty wooden spools. And like today, they didn't want to waste them as they were made from hardwoods, and nicely turned. So they made all kinds of furnishings from them. Toys, beds, and of course, Spool Shelves. These types of shelves are meant to be decorative, and were called "What-Not" shelves. They can be just about any size you need, depending on the size of the spools and the size of the wood you cut for the shelves. This unused pattern is full sized, but can be adjusted to whatever size you wish. The finished piece can be stained or painted, with hand painted trim or using decals. Make sure, before you start that you have enough spools, and that they are in the same matching sizes. They don't have to be the same size throughout, but they do need to be the same on each side of the shelf. I have several patterns from Ruth Spears for painted Marching Boys Trim that would be wonderful for these shelves. Ruth Spears was one of the premier woodworking pattern makers in the 1940s; most of the men were away fighting the war, and she was already a terrific designer for home DIY projects such as rug making, so she was able to "Slot" right in for woodworking. The people who made most of the woodworking home items during 1944 were women, and they loved her styles.
