Description: Up for bid are 2 original vintage pre-owned 1948 Boy Scout of America Handbooks for Boys 5th Edition Cover Art by Don Ross. Found at an estate sale of a deceased scouter and collector of scouting memorabilia. During 1948, the BSA lowered its entry age from 12 to 11 and changed the advancement requirements, necessitating a new Handbook. These are the two Boy Scouts 5th Editions that came out with copyright of 1948. The first 5th edition handbook is the 1st handbook printed in 1948. It was marked as the 5th edition, first printing and June 1948. The cover is a painting of a patrol of Scouts hiking down a wooded trail, wearing campaign hats and red neckerchiefs. Cover art by BSA art director Don Ross. It has 566 pages. Some general wear from use and storage. The pages are clean except for the name and information of the boy scout on the inside cover. The second 5th edition handbook is the 6th Print June 1953, 568 pages. The cover has two Scouts (red neckerchiefs) and an Explorer, all in overseas caps, sitting around a campfire with the smoke forming an Indian behind them. (The cover picture was changed because of the BSA's switch from campaign hats to overseas caps). These book covers show some scuffing and edge wear. I didn't see any marks inside the book, except the previous scout’s name and information on the inside front cover. The books measure about 6 3/4” by 4". The spine is tight. The text, photos and illustrations are all great in both books. Most wear is along the edges and corners. Please see pictures for more condition details or e-mail with any questions.
