What's the difference?? Read on... TRICK OF THE EYE OR TRICK OF THE TREASURY? Due to numerous factors including WW1 reparation payments, rebuilding costs, shortage of precious metals, foreign loan interest and welfare for workers (primarily those fired or or on strike in the French-occupied Ruhr) Germany resorted to printing more and more paper money which created a vicious cycle of hyperinflation. By late 1923 the once almighty Reichsmark (comprised of 100 Reichspfennigs) had become worthless!! It took many millions of them just to buy a loaf of bread!! By early 1924, thanks to 4 financial geniuses*, the German Treasury had created the Rentenpfennig which was backed by mortgages on agricultural land and business real estate. It was worth a staggering 1,000,000,000,000 (1 Trillion) Reichspfennig!!! It looked exactly the same as, and was minted from the same metal(s) as, the Reichspfennig, the only difference being that the word "Renten" replaced the word "Reichs". * Hans Luther (Minister of Finance), Hialmar Schacht (Reichsbank President), Karl Helfferich (economist), and Rudolf Hilfering (Luther's predecessor) Miraculously, this did manage to stabilize the national currency and eventually (by 1926) the Reichspfennig traded on par with the Rentenpfennig, which allowed the Rentenpfennig to be discontinued. The Reichspfennig continued to be issued in its original design until 1936. However, almost all Rentenpfennig coins extant today are dated between 1923 and 1925 which makes them considerably scarcer. For the entire history please enter "German Rentenmark" in the Wikipedia search box.
