Description: Treen 'cat' plate holder, wood, made in England during the Georgian period, between 1790-1820 (photographs 1 to 7). A treen 'cat' is called a 'cat', as the tripod design resembles a 'cat', by always landing on it's feet. Description: The treen 'cat' consists of a central sphere, which has an engraved line around it's central circumference, & two engraved circular lines on either side (photographs 1 to 4). Six legs extend from the sphere to form an upper & lower tripod. The upper tripod enables the treen 'cat' to hold a plate (plate not included), & the lower tripod provides a stable stand (photographs 5 to 7). Any of the six legs can be used for the upper or lower tripod, by rotating the treen 'cat'. The end of each leg has an acorn shape, which can be used as a foot (photographs 1 to 4). The end of several of these acorn feet, also include a small circular hole or indentation (photographs 1 & 2). Below each acorn foot are three truncated cones, which enable plates of different sizes to be held within the upper tripod (photographs 1 to 7). Condition: The side of one of the truncated cones is missing, another has worn at it's bottom edge, & a third has a slight crack (photograph 2). The acorn feet all have patches of wear & discoloration, due to them being in contact with other surfaces (photographs 1 to 4). However, considering it's age & use, the treen 'cat' is in reasonable condition (photographs 1 to 7). Dimensions: The height of the treen 'cat' is 24 cm, the width 28.9 cm, the depth 32 cm, & it's maximum length from one end to the other 40 cm (photographs 1 to 4). The approximate weight of the treen 'cat' is 250 g.
