Description: On April 30, 1984 TWA extended its New York to Cairo Boeing 747 service to Kuwait, utilizing a Boeing 727 on the new segment. There was a crew change in addition to an equipment change in Cairo. R. Beckner flew both segments between New York and Cairo, while P.R. Cushing was the pilot for the two inaugural segments between Cairo and Kuwait. The inaugural eastbound flight was scheduled to arrive on April 30. Covers flown to Kuwait received either no backstamp or a backstamp dated May 3, 6, or 7. This cover was carried on the inaugural TWA flight from the John F Kennedy Airport in New York to Kuwait (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as TW-F70x.In January 2001, Trans World Airlines filed for a third and final bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. American Airlines laid off many former TWA employees in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. TWA continued to exist as an LLC under American Airlines until July 1, 2003 at which time all operations were integrated into American Airlines.
