Description: This book came from a retired U.S. Army Colonel. He was an avid collector and historian of guns, knives, bayonets, other military items and beyond. One of his assignments was as an instructor at West Point, so more than likely he obtained this book while there. There are some special aspects to this volume: The front of this book is signed 'Samuel D. Freeman', so it looks like this copy was owned by him. Freeman was a West Point grad - 1883. He later served as a cavalry scout in Texas, Arizona and the Dakotas. He returned to West Point as a professor of math, 1887 - 1892, and then again as a professor of philosophy, 1893 - 1897. He retired as only a Major with over 30 years of service. Secondly, the author of this book, then Lieutenant Henry Albert. Reed, was also a West Point grad, 1870. Reed fought in several Civil War battles, being wounded at Stone River. He attended West Point after the Civil War. He served as instructor there 1876 - 1880 and then again 1883 - 1888. He retired as Brigadier General in 1906 with 42 years of service. Size of this book is 12" x 9 3/4". Well Illustrated, with many being fold-outs, and several with color. This listing is for one original, complete hardcover book. Free shipping to any of the 50 U.S. states. TOPOGRAPHICAL DRAWING AND SKETCHING INCLUDING PHOTOGRAPHY APPLIED TO SURVEYING By Lieut. Henry A. Reed, U.S. Army, Assistant Professor of Drawing, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Third Edition - Revised and Enlarged. Published by John Wiley & Sons New York 1890. This book is actually two volumes in one. The first part is drawing and sketching - this part has 140 pages and 23 plates - most of these fold-outs. The second part is the photography/surveying section. This part has 68 pages and then 3 fold-outs. Overall, the gist of this book is mapmaking! Back in the day - even in my day - we lived by the map - this modern GPS stuff did not exist! Very good condition overall, with incredibly little wear for a book 134 years old. No interior markings and minimal age staining No torn or bent pages. No library markings. Binding sound. All text and illustrations clean and clear. Covers and spine very decent. One defect - very odd - page 139 and only that page has degradation along one inch of right margin. See photos please. Returns accepted with full refund if you are not satisfied. (You would need to pay return shipping.) Sorry, no sales to Canada or anywhere other than 50 U.S. states. Book will be well packaged and shipped at my cost.
