Description: For the Baseball Hobbyist. . . Grandmother's Cookies card | A very limited edition* TONY PONCE, 1953-1955 San Francisco Seals ~ Premium (postcard) size** 1951-1958 Pacific Coast League Players | Photos by Doug McWilliams This is one of 52 "Grandmother's Cookies" cards made by Doug McWilliams honoring Pacific Coast League ballplayers, 1951 to 1958. Complete sets were sold out by Mr. McWilliams years ago; only a few singles are available. Premium (or postcard size) Card size is approximately 3-5/16" by 5-1/4" with rounded corners - reminiscent of the classic Mother's Cookies cards of 1952-1953 but in larger format. Each is printed on glossy photographic stock and the backs are blank. Doug McWilliams also produced a like number of his Grandmother's Cookie Cards in regular size: approximately 2-3/16" by 3-1/2" with rounded corners - just like the vintage Mother's Cookies cards of the early 1950s. These also were printed on glossy photographic stock with blank backs and are available in very limited quantities. * The Asterisks ** *Just 10 complete sets of Premium (postcard size) cards were produced plus a few dozen singles. A reported 108 complete sets plus a few dozen singles, more or less, of each regular size card were produced. No complete sets remain. **Premium size equates to approximately 3-5/16 by 5-1/4 inches **Regular size equates to approximately 2-3/16" X 3-1/2" About Doug McWilliams Doug McWilliams' love of baseball and Pacific Coast League ball in particular goes back many decades. Starting in 1953 to continuing through 1957, as a 15 to 19 year old, Doug captured many PCL players photographically on his way to becoming a professional photographer. His love of photography took him in 1955 to the University of Kansas to study photo journalism for 2 years, finishing up at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara (California) for 3 years. Doug became a successful Industrial / Scientific photographer for the University of California in Berkeley for 31 years and was Topps' West Coast photographer for baseball, 23 years. He also photographed NBA basketball for one year and NFL football for two. He especially "loved doing baseball and getting to know the fellows." For the past decade he has been working with the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, which has accepted his life work in baseball photography for the period, 1969 to the present. At age 82, he still shoots photos at Oakland. and San Francisco. Doug says, "As the latin players say: "Besbol has bean berry gud to me!"" Mr. McWilliams first sold his cards at shows in the San Francisco Bay area and by mail to friends who lived elsewhere. Later, he displayed and sold sets of his PCL Grandmother's Cookies at Pacific Coast League Historical Society meetings. At one collector's request he also produced Premium (postcard) size renditions of the regular size cards. No full sets of either regular or premium size cards remain available - only selected singles which we recently acquired. "Each project was really quite labor intensive. They were all real photographs, and each one had to be hand cut with paper cutter. And I bought a corner-round punch, to make them look like the real Mother’s cards of 1952 & '53. Because they were printed on Photographic paper, the backs were plain..." Doug grew up with another PCL enthusiast: well-known photographer and author, the late Dick Dobbins. "Dick was my best friend; we lived next door to each other [from the time] I was 4 and he was 7. He taught me all about baseball when I was 10 or so, and later as a teenager, got me interested in photography." We asked Doug, How many cards in total were issued? His response; "For the regular sized cards, I would guess about 108 sets. (I [was] able to print 9 cards at a time on a sheet of photo paper. The premiums I could print only 4 at a time. I have kept 2 sets for myself of each size". And, to repeat, no complete sets remain, only singles. About the scans: The first two scans show the card in the listing title, front and back, while the third scan displays a Premium (postcard) card beside its Regular size counterpart. The offer is only for one Premium card. These Premium cards will fit in standard 4-pocket collector sheets with full card coverage while the Regular size cards fit in standard 9-pocket pages. Condition: Excellent/Near-Mint or better but the cutting - especially the rounded corners - may be imperfect due to hand-cutting by an octogenarian. These "Grandmother's Cookies" cards were largely a labor of love by a longtime PCL enthusiast! Shipping OPTIONS are available - YOUR CHOICE of either eBay standard envelope service (ESE) which is cheaper with slower delivery or USPS Ground Advantage (more costly for single cards but much faster delivery). We also offer UNLIMITED singles (up to and including 8X10 inches in size) shipped via Ground Advantage for the one card rate. Both services include insurance but USPS Ground Advantage is considerably quicker, with fewer limitations. _______________________ Important: Shipping Information Our goal has always been to keep shipping costs low.
