The long-awaited autobiography of legendary singer Tom Jones, following six decades of unparalleled experiences in the spotlight to coincide with his 75th birthday. Across six decades, Sir Tom Jones has maintained a vital career in a risky, unstable business notorious for the short lives of its artists. With a drive that comes from nothing but the love for what he does, he breaks through and then wrestles with the vagaries of the music industry, the nature of success and its inevitable consequences. Having recorded an expansive body of work and performed with fellow artists from across the spectrum and across every popular music genre, from rock, pop and dance to country, blues and soul, the one constant throughout has been his unique musical gifts and unmistakable voice. But how did a boy from a Welsh coal-mining family attain success across the globe? And how has he survived the twists and turns of fame and fortune to not only stay exciting, but actually become more credible and interesting with age? In this, his first ever autobiography, Tom revisits his past and tells the tale of his journey from wartime Pontypridd to LA and beyond. He reveals the stories behind the ups and downs of his fascinating and remarkable life, from the early heydays to the subsequent fallow years to his later period of artistic renaissance. It's the story nobody else knows or understands, told by the man who lived it, and written the only way he knows how: simply and from the heart. Raw, honest, funny and powerful, this is a memoir like no other from one of the world's greatest ever singing talents. This is Tom Jones and Over the Top and Back is his story. Editorial Reviews "In Jones' new autobiography...the singer recounts some other excesses of his glory days, and of the leaner years and more modest venues that followed before his resurgence in recent decades. But the lasting image is that of Jones, now 75, as a family man who has been married to the same woman...for 58 years."—USA Today "Packed with the kind of showbiz tales you don't get any more... Jones is a charming, matey voice and the book is a terrific, star-studded journey through the world of entertainment. Even after meeting some of the greats, such as Elvis and Sinatra, Jones still retains an innocence and freshness that is rare."—Daily Express "A great read and funny. It charts his youth in the coal mining town of Pontypridd. It captures his Welshness."—Sunday Telegraph "Tom Jones really has had the most astonishing life, one which he recounts here with verve, energy and a vivid eye for detail - this is a hugely enjoyable read."—The Daily Mail "This lively, thoughtful and entertaining account does justice to a remarkable life and career.—Sunday Express “A brilliant read full of charm and anecdote that captures the spirit of each decade as well as giving a great behind-the-scenes snapshot of the music world.”—Fanny Blake, Woman & Home "Bound to be of great interest to pop music fans, especially those who remember Jones’s glory days, when women threw their panties at this übermale superstar. The honesty and openness with which Jones shares his life and career make it a must-read."—Library Journal, Starred Review "In attitude and anecdote, his engaging and illuminating book backs him up...A remarkable memoir by a remarkable artist."—Kirkus, Starred Review “A story brilliantly told...Hold up your banners: ‘Sir Tom F****** Jones’. Yeah!”—Bryan Appleyard, The Sunday Times “A book that gets to Jones's core.”—The Daily Mirror About the Author Tom Jones was born Thomas Jones Woodward in South Wales to a traditional coal-mining family. He began singing at an early age and landed is first record contract in 1964, winning a Grammy in 1965 for "It's Not Unusual." Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2006 for his services to music, his recordings have spanned the spectrum of musical styles over 60 years. He lives with his wife of 58 years, Melinda, in Wales and California. They have one son. You see the love they have for each other and the love of family in the book. The book is well written and it is like Tom is there talking to you. I couldn't put it down. The way the book starts out was genius. It made it a page turner. One thing it did make me do, I purchased his last two albums. Thanks for a great book! Ann E. Hobler 5.0 out of 5 stars A real treasure and a great read. Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2015 Verified Purchase Very honest and enjoyable. Only Mr. jones could tell his life story. Gives us a good idea of what it was like in the early stages of rock and roll in England and the part he played in all of it. More than enjoyed it and recommend it highly. You will have fun with this one! Mickie 5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2015 Verified Purchase I found this autobiography fascinating and very funny sometimes. Tom Jones is of my generation and I was fascinated with his stories of the 50's, 60's and beyond. Well worth reading for the history of music at this time when everything was changing but also for Mr. Jones honesty and poking fun at himself. I couldn't put it down. Judy D. 5.0 out of 5 stars He has a great sense of humor and I shall never forget his ... Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2015 Verified Purchase Waited 25 years for his book!! Have met him many times and he is always polite (and handsome). He has a great sense of humor and I shall never forget his yucky story in this book about Elvis! What a treat, a celebrity with a good childhood and strong family ties and still in the limelight. He will always be loved by millions of fans. It doesn't seem from the book (but he does have a right to his privacy) that he cares about much outside of the music business; hopefully he can slow down a bit and enjoy the life he's earned and the people who have stood by him for so long. And best of luck with the new album! incognito89 5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2018 Verified Purchase I loved this book! I was a big fan of Tom Jones during his TV show in 1969-71, and then he disappeared into the Vegas desert and I lost touch with him for years. He wasn’t recording; just doing live shows in a city I didn’t like. And years and years later he resurfaced with “Kiss,” and “I wanna get back with you” and Sex Bomb,” and he was just as wonderful as ever. But this book illuminated, with a lovely self-deprecating sense of humor, the amazing, painful, bewildering and ultimately triumphant journey of Tom Jones, the singer and man. As others have commented, this book chronicles the music industry from the late 60’s to the present but, more than that, Jones’ “voice” in the book is authentic, humble, honest, and just as unique and powerful to “listen” to as his singing voice. After reading the book I wished more than ever that I had had the opportunity to meet him. He would make a lovely friend. I had to buy additional copies of the book to give to my friends as I couldn’t let go of my copy, even on a loan. BUY THIS BOOK and meet a talented, flawed, funny, genuine human being. Keep singing, Tom! We all still love to hear you. B. J. Ford 5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks to Tom, for the great book and sharing his talent Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2017 Verified Purchase I have to thank Tom Jones for writing "Over the Top and Back". He's proven a famous person can write an autobiography worth reading, one that's honest about revealing an authentic self, and that doesn't just try to bolster the public image of who fans think he is. And thank you to Sir Tom for mostly keeping his private business private while revealing material that's interesting to people who respect him (they're the ones whose opinions count): that takes maturity, courage, integrity, and a sophisticated sense of humor -- a real class act. I actually found Tom even more likeable after reading this autobiography because I understood more about his journey: no false modesty, just genuinely humble in a down-to-earth way -- I can't think of a single other autobiography I've read by a famous person that I can say that about (I usually end up liking them less after reading their books). Thank you to Tom for not being ruined by fame and fortune -- he must be doing something right, because for some reason he keeps getting better. Thanks to Tom for sharing the gift of his voice and talent as an entertainer, although I'll never figure out how he manages to make it look so easy. The photos in the book are tremendous, the index is helpful, and there's hardly any typographical errors (maybe the words "didn't sell" on the last line of page 373 should be "sold"?...) I was fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of attending a Tom Jones concert in a big tent in Cohasset, Massachusetts, at the South Shore Music Circus -- something like 20 years ago now, but still a thrill to remember standing at the end of the row and getting to high-five him as he headed down the aisle to the stage...God bless him. Gary J. Chenett 5.0 out of 5 stars A Biography about a regualr who became a star and a example for the rest of the World. Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2015 Verified Purchase I have always enjoyed Tom Jones but honestly have never bought any of his music ( until recently) . Tom is a incredible example of not letting his stardom go to his head or allowing it to destroy his life or family. It is a incredible written truth about making the road to the top and he makes it well known "it ain 't easy" . If ever a example of never quitting once you have made a decision on your career Jones makes a shining one. I did enjoy his frankness and openness about his personality and his morals......He sounds like the kind of guy I would want to meet just anywhere because I am sure he would be easy to get along with.... It was also interesting to hear his take on the many . many big stars he worked with or was friends with.... This book is a keeper.......... D's mom 5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the humor in this book Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2015 Verified Purchase I loved the humor in this book, in addition to his talent Tom is a very witty guy. It's amazing to think that he was married and had a son at age 17 and has still been married all these years. If you are looking for a juicy tell all of on tour romances you won't find it here, and understandably so (as he states emphatically how important and grounding his wife is to him), but trust me you won't be missing anything. Plenty of delightful tidbits of Elvis and many more, but more importantly, and amazing life story and talent that has stood the test of time. This book makes you want to go have a drink at the pub with him. Read and enjoy!! J.C. 5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones Gone Gray Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2016 Verified Purchase I like to read biographies and OVER THE TOP AND BACK in an autobiography written in collaboration with his friend Giles Smith. The language is very intelligent sprinkled with expletives and profanity. Tom Jones is human. He begins with his life in Pontypridd Wales and his love relationship with his wife Linda. They had a baby on the way but had to live apart until they were of age. The impression I get of Tom (Woodward) Jones is that he is very intuitive and intelligent. He always wanted to be a singer and writes about the times and years it took him to be accepted and famous. I can remember him on the Ed Sullivan Show singing IT'S NOT UNUSUAL and I liked what I saw and heard. He had his old nose then and eventually had it fixed as some artists do. The book is long with small print and it took me a while to read it all. Linda was v ery pretty and Tom speaks highly of her .She endured a lot, separations and such and managed to stay married to him all these years. One thing he says is that he'd rather talk to Linda over the phone because she looks old! He decided to dispense with vanity and let his hair go gray illustrating an older Tom. Ironically, he chose to put his 75 year old face on the cover. He does look good for his age and you can't help but notice his baby blues with a black fringe. He begins with his wife Linda and ends the book still with her and declares they love one another. Commendable. Left out of the book is women who he may have become involved with. But Tom talks about how women threw their panties at him on stage. He didn't like it at first but they loved his gyrations while he performed. He has a great voice and had to take care of maybe losing it because it is so vibrant and powerful. He was Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II but never inducted into the American Hall of Rock and Roll. He also has a running feud with Engleburt Humperdinck. The book is a great read that mostly touches on his struggles in the music industry and leaves out personal information while he was a performer. I hope someone writes a book about him so we can learn of his personal life warts and all. S. Fedie 5.0 out of 5 stars A great read. Mr Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2015 Verified Purchase A great read. Mr. Jones goes into just enough detail to give the reader an excellent history of his career and relationships while keeping the pace of the book moving. He comes across as an honest and likable guy who learned (sometimes the hard way) how to navigate his career through its ups and downs and how to deal with his successes and failures along the way and keep his sense of humor through all of it. To still have the gift of that voice into his 70s is amazing, and what's best about it is that Tom isn't planning to quit singing to us.
