Description: I'm not a record dealer but I do shop Thrift Shops and look for records in good shape, either for my personal enjoyment or to make available to you. This set of Time-Life LPs focused on the Swing Era looked very attractive to me and I've now played 3 or 4 sides out of 18 (9 LPs total) and been very pleased with the sound quality, this despite the fact that the records do not appear to be in great condition and I was worried they would sound lousy or noisy or worse. But no, the sound is really quite good on my Fluance turntable with a Nagaoka MP110 phono cartridge. Also, I didn't clean the records or do anything at all to enhance their condition: I'm selling this batch AS IS meaning as I found them. They look, as I said and as the photos will show, lousy. Someone with a an unsteady hand seems to have let his tonearm and needle slide across nearly all the records leaving visible light scratches. However, records are funny that way: they can look bad and sound great or look great and sound bad. In this case, we lucked out: these records are very enjoyable. I wouldn't want to say perfect...different people own different equipment and have different ears and different expectations...but I'm not hearing anything that would make me hesitate to sell them. So what have we got here? First, these are "Recreations" by composer/musician Billy May. This gentleman was hired by Time-Life to rerecord classic music in better quality modern stereo sound than could be created by trying to remaster the original records. Billy May assembled first class musicians and transcribed every note of the original performances, studied their proper performance style, and put out this wonderful series of records. I've included a screenshot of a Wikipedia page about his work on this project. I only found 4 sets of 3 lps each: 1938-9, 1941-2, Into the 50's, and "Encore!" By the way, "Encore" LPs appear to be in much better overall condition than the records described above...and sound fantastic. You know, for those of us who love music and own good turntables, the big problem today is that only a tiny drop of the formerly huge Repertoire of recordings has been re-released and record companies want $20 or $30 per LP for what is available. Here's the opportunity to own 12 LPs of great music, beautifully packaged with deluxe hardcover booklets, for less than $8 per LP. Highly recommended! Please check out my 100 percent positive feedback rating on over 1200 transactions for reassurance. Thank you .
