Description: Thomas Rathbone Manley (1853-1938) Road West, Towaco (New Jersey)Oil on Boardcirca 1920s20" x 24"Signed Lower RightTitled with Original Price and Probable Inventory Number on Verso Handmade, Signed Frame by Ben Badura of New Hope, PennsylvaniaFrame Size 25-3/4" x 29-3/4" A colorful impressionist painting with areas of light impasto of a landscape near Towaco, New Jersey (Morris County), an area in which the artist lived and painted for many years. In addition to his affiliation with the noted Montclair, New Jersey, group of artists (George Innes, Ballard Williams, Emily Greenough, and Frederick Waugh among others), Manley is often associated with the Pennsylvania Impressionists because of his style and proximity to the Bucks County area. He is included in Jim Alterman's book New Hope for American Art, the seminal work on the New Hope school of painters. This is a very nice representative example of Manley's work, which does not often come to market, and is in very good condition with no apparent defects. The painting is housed in a lovely signed, original frame by noted New Hope frame maker Ben Badura; it has a few abrasions but is in overall very good condition. The painting, which is quite large and heavy, has been in our private collection for many years. IMPORTANT NOTE: SHIPPING ONLY WITHIN THE 48 CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES. NO SHIPPING TO ALASKA OR HAWAII. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. BIOGRAPHIES OF MANLEY AND BADURA
