Description: They Also Serve by Peter B Kyne-Illustrated by C. Leroy Baldridge, with Decorations by Paul Brown-Grosset & Dunlap-1927-early reprint-Hardcover-Mylar Protected Dustjacket-344 pages. The following was from the Goodreads website by contributor/author Richard Barnes:"The original 1927 copy was given to me. I had not many expectations for finishing, it, but thought to give it a try. I was greatly surprised. The story is told in the voice of a horse that is recounting his Great War days to two other horses. For a fan of WW 1&2 HF it is an excellent read. My father was in the AEF Artillery, and this story put me right back there in France with his outfit. Even the dated prose is appropriate for the era. Peter Kyne dedicated the book to a fellow battery commander, so the lingo and technical detail rings true. A must read for a WWI fan." From the dustjacket flap:“'They Also Serve' is a story in which the protagonist is neither private nor general, second-class seaman nor admiral, nor anything in between. He went into the Service before the draft yet without volunteering, for this is a tale of the Great War as it might be told by one of the four footed conscripts. And the hero is a cowboy's horse who served in France with the artillery. Kyne's vitality and racy humor are at their height in this equine commentary upon the army which is also a love story as sensed by the one witness who presence never put constraint upon the lover's ardor. There isn't a man who went to the war, or a boy who wanted to go, or a woman whether she went or stayed at home, that will not relish the gusto of 'They Also Serve'". Also from Goodreads.com website: "Peter Bernard Kyne was an American novelist who wrote between 1904 and 1940. Many of his works were adapted into screenplays starting in the silent era, particularly his first novel, The Three Godfathers, which was published in 1913 and proved to be a huge success. He is credited in 110 films between 1914 and 1952. When still under 18, he lied about his age and enlisted in Company L, 14th U.S. Infantry, which served in the Philippines from 1898-1899. The Spanish-American War and the following insurrection of General Emilio Aguinaldo provided background for many of Kyne's later stories.[1] During World War I, he served as a captain in Battery A of the 144th field Artillery, known as the California Grizzlies."
