ABOUT THE ARTIST Following training at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, Theadora Van Runkle started out as an illustrator for store advertisements and catalogues. She first worked in the motion picture industry as a sketch artist on the epic film HAWAII (1967). Van Runkle made a lasting name for herself, as a motion picture costume designer, when her first film, BONNIE & CLYDE, with her 1930's costumes for Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons, Gene Wilder, and Michael J. Pollard started an exciting international fashion trend. Van Runkle went on to become a top designer in her field, creating costumes for all the great stars of our time - Lucille Ball (MAME); Peter Sellers (I LOVE YOU ALICE B. Van Runkle went on to win the Los Angeles Art Directors Award (in 1962) and she joined other fashion icons, such as Oscar de la Renta, when the international press honored her with the Golden Tiberius Award in Rome, Italy (1968) Van Runkle has been nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Costumes from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films for her work on HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1978) and PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (1986), and she won the BAFTA Film Award (the English equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Costume Design for NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977). Van Runkle also received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Costume Design for the Prime Time Series WIZARDS AND WARRIORS (1983). Theadora Van Runkle was awarded the Career Achievement Award from the Costume Designers Guild in 2002.
