Glaser later said that he tried to use the “vocabulary of Broadway” in his design: rather than a main character, he chose to represent one of the ensemble dancers from “The Tornado Ballet” that leads into Dorothy and Toto’s arrival in Oz. The silhouette and smoke-like swirls are hallmarks of Glaser’s work of the 1960s and 70s.
