The WEST INDIES, in 1594 Theodore de Bry's America (Frankfort) - Print

Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Vintage Historical Map Print Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Girolamo Benzoni traveled between 1541 and 1556 in the Caribbean Sea. Born in Milan, he traveled to the New World by working aboard a ship. He witnessed many Spanish cruelties with the Indians, with whom he seems to have had some sympathy. His beautifully engraved maps show the disproportionately sized islands of the West Indies. Theodore de Bry was born in 1528 in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, in the southern Netherlands (today Belgium). Trained as a goldsmith in his father's workshop, he left his home town around 1558 and moved to Strasbourg. Religious motives partly inspired his emigration, but commercial incentives were probably more important for de Bry since Strasbourg was more attractive. Here he gradually began to shift his focus to copper engraving. De Bry began collaborating on a series of books about America. In 1588, the de Bry family moved to Frankfurt, and there Theodore published the first volume of the America series. This first volume was the only one in the whole collection which appeared in four different languages: German, Latin, French and English. The following volumes appeared only in German and Latin. Theodore continued publishing and produced a blend of richly illustrated prestigious volumes of the voyages collection, which was the family firm's flagship publication. --- The vintage 1965 print offered here depicts a de Bry map of the Caribbean islands as it appeared in the 1594 edition of America. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
