Lily is a singular character, hilariously funny, sweetly poignant and deeply daggy. Plagued by social doubts and her own pecularities, she is the perfect person to investigate the many secrets of her grandfathers house and, along the way, mend some family relationships, discover enduring friendships and learn to play netball. FORMAT Paperback CONDITION Brand New Author Biography Paula Hayes has a BA in Literature and History and a Diploma of Education from the University of Western Australia. Her short story The Universe Under My Bed was published in Alphabet Soup, a childrens literary magazine (now blog), and she has self-published a young adult novel, Heart, about the supernatural journey of a lost WWI Perth soldier. Paula isa book reviewer for Creative Kids Tales. She is married with four children, three dogs and five rabbits. Review Eleven-year-old Lily Griffin is precocious but lonely-bullied by her brother and benignly neglected by the rest of her unusual family. Lilys life changes dramatically when she discovers a girl trapped in a mirror in her grandparents spare room, beginning a journey towards friendship, familial reconciliation and self-discovery. Told through highly articulate journal entries, Lilys story unfolds over three distinct parts. The first, originally published as *Lily in the Mirror* (2016), covers the mystery of the mirror girl, and the declining health of Lilys grandmother. Part two continues with a supernatural puzzle, linking to Lilys mothers expedition to find her birth family in Vietnam. Part three concludes the ghost story which began in the first section, and showcases Lilys growth in regards to her understanding of her extended family and her new friends. The writing is fast-paced, almost frenetic, as if Lily is rushing to ensure the reader knows everything that is happening. Coupled with Lilys tendency to drop in observational side notes and word definitions, and some quite dense historical detail, this style can be distracting, though this eases in the second half of the book. While this novel qualifies as supernatural in genre, the real world is very present in the story. The issues of friendship, bullying, family dynamics and death that are explored throughout the book are relatable and suitable for the intended middle-grade audience, but overall the book is recommended for stronger readers in upper primary. *Tehani Croft is a teacher librarian, academic, publisher and literary awards convenor.* Review Quote New fantasy novel gives pre-teens a way to relate to real life issues. -- Cockburn Gazette This is not only a wonderful fantasy read, but it is a story about family support, sibling issues, coping with dementia, loss and love. --Lamont Books Promotional "Headline" Packed full of adventure, magic and a little bit of history, The Vexatious Haunting of Lily Griffin will entertain and engage children from start to finish.
