Tanner's Tudor Constitutional Documents (...)[.]However, it soon became apparent that something more than a revised edition would be required: a book thirty-five years old and in a sense representative of a state of learning now over fifty years old could not just be overhauled but had to be replaced; and I therefore agreed, after consulting various people whose advice I valued (...) that it would be both simpler and more accurate to let this book appear over my name only. Thus it must be my first duty to discharge my debt to the scholar upon whose work I have rested my own. Dr Tanner was for many years one of the mainstays of historical teaching in Cambridge, a major figure in the University and in St John's College. Though he died in 193I, affectionate memories of him are still very much alive. (...) Because it was my original commission to 'bring him up to date', I took from Tanner a number of things: the arrangement by topics (though I have changed these), a general guidance in the choice of documents (...), and above all the principle of introducing the documents with lengthy commentaries.
