The Richelieu dike is a dike that was built in La Rochelle during the siege led between 1627 and 1628 by Cardinal Richelieu , to prevent the city from being supplied by sea.Depicts the artwork, The Siege of La Rochelle, by Jacques Callot (1592-1635) French print-maker and etcher. The Siege of La Rochelle (French: Le Siège de La Rochelle, or Le Grand Siège de La Rochelle) was a war between 1627 and 1628 between the French army of King Louis XIII of France and the Huguenots of La Rochelle. It was the result. This siege marked the culmination of the struggle between Catholics and Protestants in France, ending in a complete victory for Louis XIII and the Catholics. In August 1628, a third attempted fleet was dispatched under Lord Admiral Lindsay, consisting of 29 warships and 31 merchants. In September 1628, a British fleet attempted to rescue the city. The British fleet had to retreat after bombarding the French positions and failing to break through the breakwaters. After this final disappointment, the city surrendered on October 28, 1628. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
