Description: Stock Image The Night Blitz 1940-1941 JOHN RAY 288 PAGES, ILLUSTRATED, MAPS Unlike the Battle of Britain, in the summer of 1940, the night Blitz on Britain by the Luftwaffe in 1940-41 has not attracted the same prolific attention from military historians. When the Germans realised their daylight aerial campaign to subdue Britain was not achieving the expected results they switched the bombing effort to night raids, particularly on London. While many of the targets selected for German bombs were economic, industrial, ports or military facilities, the main intent of the raids was to weaken the morale and will to fight of the civilian population and much of the bombing fell in residential areas. The night campaign began in September 1940 and continued until May 1941, after which it gradually abated, although raids contined at lower intensity until Germany surrendered in 1945, these included the unmanned VI and V2 flying bomb and rocket weapons. John Ray has covered every aspect of the Blitz in this well researched and comprehensive account. The German strategic intentions are traversed, as is their use of radio beams to improve target strike accuracy. On the other hand the RAF struggled to perfect electronic night-fighter detection aids to increase the toll on the raiding bombers. Political, and service leadership and issues within the RAF, are well detailed, as is the development and efficiency of the organisations, many of them civilian, charged with dealing with the aftermath of the raids --- the homeless, the injured, food supplies and accommodation, fire fighting, Air Raid precautions and a host of situations unforseen pre-war. While London may have experienced the brunt of the Blitz, many other cities and towns were visited by the Luftwaffe, with raids on Coventry, and some of the major port cities, recorded in detail, as is the response to the Blitz by Bomber Command of the RAF, with strikes deep into Germany giving a boost to British morale. During the Blitz up to end of 1940 more than 22,000 civilians were killed, 13,390 of them in London. In 1941, about 20,000 lost their lives in raids, more than 13,000 of these casualties in cities, towns or villages outside London. Many thousands more were injured. However, the Luftwaffe failed again to break the will of the British people and after Hitler turned his military machine east toward Russia in June 1941 the full fury of the Blitz was over. John Ray has described in "The NIght Blitz" this period of British history with a veritable mass of information, presented in an even-handed and objective way, and one that places the Blitz in its proper place alongside the Battle of Britain.
