Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The Medieval English Stage Corpus Christi Pageants and Plays Alan H Nelson University of Chicago Press 1974 274 pages Hardcover This book comes from the estate of an 84 year old friend who was an art history professor and has just moved into a nursing home. She has well over 10,000 books in her library and we will, very slowly, be listing some of them on ebay. Review of The Medieval English Stage: “Part of the rapidly growing interest in the English Corpus Christi plays as drama- tic art has been a spirited commitment to reexamining that welter of empirical data from which a clear understanding of the plays origins, histories, and means of production will hopefully and finally emerge. The first encyclopedic study of these records since Glynne Wickham's Early English Stages, 1300-1600 (1999- 72), Alan Nelson's The Medieval English Stage is a useful and highly readable book, conveniently divided into discrete studies of eight major dramatic centers York, Wakefield, Beverly, Lincoln, Norwich, Coventry, Chester, and London- prefaced with an introduction and closing with an examination of two dozen or so "miscellaneous towns and cities." Nelson's major concerns are defined by his subtitle, Corpus Christi Pageants and Plays, for although he surveys a number of medieval dramatic and nondramatic activities, his "primary aim is to discover how, when, where, and for whom the Corpus Christi plays were performed," his secondary aim being "to discover something about their origins" (p. 11). Aggressively skeptical of a number of long-standing assumptions and recently propounded theories, Nelson's work is bound to be the cause of some degree of skepticism in others, in part because many of his findings are bold and new, in part because the records he must deal with are incomplete, cryptic, and admir- ably resistant to unifying synthesis.” This book is in VG+ condition.
