Description: "The Machine Gun" series was authored by Col. George M. Chinn (USMC) for the United States Navy (USN), Bureau of Ordinance. The series was originally four volumes and published in 1951. A fifth volume was published in 1987, just before Chinn's death. An obituary published by National Defense magazine for Col. Chinn noted his expertise in small arms and automatic weapons, as well as his role in numerous small arms inventions, as well as the 40mm machine gun used by US forces during the Vietnam War. "The Machine Gun" series was appropriately described as "a monumental and authoritative collection of facts and data on automatic weapons."COPY INFORMATION:The copies in this five-volume set were in the personal collection of JTL, a career law enforcement officer, firearms expert, and long-time member of the Association of Firearms and Tool Marks Examiners (AFTE). JTL acquired the volumes individually. The book construction of the set is high quality, and the individual volumes are in excellent condition. Volume I, comprised Parts I through V. This copy is numbered as Presentation Copy 894, reprinted by Edwards Brothers, with blue hardcover and a USN cross-cannons logo for the Bureau of Ordinance. Volume II, covers Part VII of the series. This volume as printed was declassified in 1961. In private correspondence (included with this volume) Col. Chinn confirmed to JTL that Part VI of the series, had not been declassified by the USN, and therefore was not included in the edition. The copy included here was from a production run limited to 1000 copies, with a red hard cover, from Paladin Press.Volume III, comprised Parts VIII and IX of the series. This volume is marked as declassified in 1970, and was published by the USN Bureau of Ordinance. The volume iswith the blue hardcover and a USN Bureau of Ordinance cross-cannons logo. Volume IV, comprised Parts X and XI. This volume copy isnumbered as Presentation Copy 727, and it is inscribed by author.This volume was published by the USN Bureau of Ordinance,with the blue hardcover, and a USN Bureau of Ordinance cross-cannons logo. Volume V, was published in 1987 by Ramp, Inc. The final volume comprised Parts XII through XVII. This copy is also inscribed by the author,and this volume is marked as declassified in 1970. The volume is with the blue hardcover and bears the USN cross-cannons logo for the Bureau of Ordinance. COPY MARKINGS: Small personalized collection entries were placed on the inside hardcovers and blank cover pages of the volumes. The remaining pages of the set are without markings.ADDITIONAL DOCUMENT: Also included with this set is an eleven page brochure drawn from an Army Ordinance article series from 1945 and 1946. The document was subsequently published as a standalone reference document entitled: "Machine Guns of the United States, 1895-1944," by Major B.R. Lewis of the US Army Ordinance Department.
