Description: The Living Oracles by Alexander CampbellThe Sacred Writings of the Apostles and Evangelists of Jesus Christ Text is Fourth or Stereotype Edition of 1835New Testament only (Campbell didn't publish an Old Testament)Translated from the Original Greek by Doctors George Campbell, James MacKnight and Philip DoddridgeWith Prefaces, Various Emendations and An Appendix by Alexander CampbellOften called: Alexander Campbell's VersionContent Quotes: "Alexander Campbell first published his translation of the New Testament in 1826, with later editions in subsequent years. It was based on the work of three other men, whose translations he placed together and then revised and edited. Campbell made revisions where he felt the Greek text called for them, making more and more changes with each subsequent edition. His preface listed three general reasons why his new translation was justified." "First, the English language had changed substantially since the publication of the King James Version." "Second, Campbell believed the King James text contained doctrinal errors that were the result of sectarian bias on the part of the translators." "Third, Campbell believed that in his day, scholars had better knowledge of original languages, better academic tools, and better Greek texts to work from than King James's translators did." "As the title shows, it is a revision of translations of parts of the New Testament done by British scholars. The Gospels are from a translation by George Campbell (London, 1789), the Epistles from James MacKnight (London, 1795), and the Acts and Revelation from Philip Doddridge’s Family Expositor (London, 1756). In 1818 a London publisher had reprinted these versions together in one volume, and it was this 1818 edition which Campbell used to produce his own edition in 1826. But Campbell did not merely reprint the versions as he found them. He revised the text, and substituted his own Introduction and explanatory notes for the introductions and notes of the original translators." "In the first edition, he took most of the translation from various well-respected commentaries (George Campbell [no relation], MacKnight, and Doddridge) and edited it together in one volume. In the second through fourth editions, he made several changes, seeking to have more uniform translating principles throughout."
