"Taking her cue from her small sons, Aristides and Michael, Burton chose subjects that would intrigue children [including] Mary Ann, the steam shovel [Burton’s books] have heroes and heroines children can understand and enjoy, ingenious and satisfactory endings and lively illustrations. The books survive because they exhibit so effectively the elements most basic to children’s literature" (Silvey, 109-10). Condition:Book binding tight and square. Full bound cloth boards clean and bright with only moderate age-toning to ages and a couple pen-sizzed spots to bottom right of front. Illustration to front well-retained. Some rubbing to corners with mild loss. Fraying to head and foot of spine. Internally clean and unmarked but for small gift inscription neatly penned to top right of front endpaper and some light finger smudges scattered throughout. Dust Jacket presents well. Moderate to heavy wear to edges, creases, hinges and head and foot of spine with open and closed tears and some areas of partial separation. Loss to corners and head and foot of spine. Light shelf-wear and darkening to panels, but vibrant color well-preserved. More than one-half loss of title to spine. Flaps clean with light age-toning to edges. Original Price of $2.50 Not Clipped. A very nice example of this celebrated children's classic.
