Description: "The Uncle Tom’s Cabin of wage slavery.” ~ Jack London on The Jungle. Here we offer the first "sustainer's" edition of Upton Sinclair's classic muckraking novel, The Jungle, originally published by Sinclair in New York in 1906. The book was originally issued to subscribers to ("sustainers of") a socialist newspaper in this form before being published in its later retail form. The edition was originally limited to 5,000 copies, though only 972 were sold and the rest remaindered eventually to booksellers, some even having their title pages replaced with a Doubleday title page. Sustainer's colophone impressed with black ink on front board. There is no sustainer's label attached to the endpapers of this copy, which would indicate it was eventually sold in a bookstore. It has a packet of ads at rear, and it has its original "Jungle Publishing" title page, which is, I believe, a mixed-state first printing. A bookmark with first edition collector's notes is also included. Soiled, edgeworn boards (please see pics.) Intact endpapers feature a personal library bookplate, a former owner's blindstamp, and wear at front and rear endpages from removed plates/library materials. Half-title page (page preceding title page bearing just the title) has a removed inscription.First 26 pages or so have a light stain at middle top edge. Binding is very tight and square; text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 413 pages, plus 3 pages of ads; the book measures approximately 8 x 5.25-inches. This iconic first edition will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very special gift. Please click HERE to see other American radical classics we offer.
