Nice solid first edition copy of Chandler’s third novel - and his first not based at least partially on previously published short stories. 20th Century Fox purchased the screen rights and then sat on it for five years, before releasing a poorly put together film version for which they changed the title to ‘The Brasher Doubloon’. Legend has it that four major stars, starting with Fred MacMurray, signed on to play Marlowe but then one after another, abandoned the project due to delays, contract disputes, etc. Suffice to say, someone should revisit the novel and work up a new screenplay (I’m looking at you Timothy Olyphant!).
