Browne created the Ward character as an illiterate rube with "Yankee common sense." Brown also played the part in public performances, and is considered to be America's first stand-up comedian. Walter Muir Whitehill (1905–1978) was an American author, historian, medievalist, and the Director and Librarian of the Boston Athenaeum from 1946 to 1973. He was also editor for publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts from 1946 to 1978. From 1951 to 1972 Whitehill was a professor at Harvard University. On July 11, 1976, Whitehill delivered an address at the Old State House about the history and development of Boston on the occasion of the Bicentennial Celebration of the United States to an audience that included Queen Elizabeth II. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
