Description: BORGES, Jorge Luis. The Aleph and Other Stories 1933-1969. Together with Commentaries and an Autobiographical Essay. Edited and translated by Norman Thomas di Giovanni. London: Jonathan Cape. 1971. First English language edition. Publisher’s slate grey cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the striking dust jacket designed by Alan Tunbridge. A near fine copy, the book clean and bright, the binding tight and square, the topstain a little dulled and dust-marked, a few very faint marks to fore-edge. Internally fine. The dust jacket unclipped (£2.40 net) with all four corners neatly cut, some mild toning but an altogether sharp copy and uncommon as such. A collection of twenty mostly fantastical short stories from the Argentine, written over the course of thirty six years. Eleven of the stories had previously not appeared in English, and in Borges’ preface, he talks of the typically experimental work performed with his translator, the two refusing to use dictionaries so as to emulate the stories having been written in English. The detailed autobiographical essay to the rear is wonderful.
