Description: Offered is an original World War One German military bayonet manufactured for use with the Gewehr 98 service rifle. This bayonet is the model 1898/05 and is commonly known as the “butcher blade” bayonet. This is the second pattern and has the low ears and the flash guard. It was manufactured by Deutsche Maschinefabrik AG, otherwise known as Demag. It is marked with a Crown over W on the spine for manufacture under Kaiser Wilhelm. The spine is also marked 15 for manufacture in 1915 and is fraktur proofed beneath the date. It is further fraktur proofed on both the hilt and on the pommel. The blade is stick straight and retains its factory edge and tip, having never been sharpened. The blade remains exceptionally bright, with only the most minor of spotting and showing only minor surface scratches. The grips are free from cracks and chips, show little in the way of handling marks and the screws are unmolested. The lock/release button functions as it should. This bayonet is offered together with its original scabbard, which also bears multiple fraktur proofs. The scabbard is dent free and retains the overwhelming majority of its original paint. Overall, this is a superb original World War One German butcher blade bayonet that would be exceedingly difficult to upgrade in condition.
