STUNNING ANTIQUE GEORGIAN ENGLISH 18K GOLD HAIR WHITE ENAMEL MOURNING RING 1769

Description: An incredible, genuine and rare heart-wrenching Georgian mourning ring in solid 18 carat gold. Extremely unusually, it bears white enamel instead of the usual black, commemorating the death of an innocent. Its central locket compartment holds a wonderful sepia image reading the poignant adage 'Not Lost But Gone Before' around a superbly ornate commemorative urn. What's really amazing about this is that the whole image and words are made up of microscopic fragments of hair taken from the deceased - this is only visible under strong magnification, the detail, style and accuracy of the image and lettering are a testament to a master hairwork artist. It's utter perfection. The locket is surrounded by rich red-pink garnets in their inimitable Georgian flat-topped riviere style, and it's all set into a shallow, rounded oval gold head. The band, charmingly waved along its circumference, has a lovely, deeply rounded back and flat front bearing the fabulously finely enamelled dedication 'Hannah Robinson Ob. 5 Aug 1769 Æ 19' in white vitreous enamel. It's in incredible antique condition for its age, with very slight evidence of adjustment to one or two areas around the head - this is marginal. The stones are very good with no significant nicks or chips, and the enamel is also very good, with only light surface wear to speak of.
