Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) STROMNESS.This is a busy town, of rather peculiar formation, small streets descending the hill and crossing the main street down to jetties in the harbour. The latter is well-sheltered, and of great importance to the fishery industries, and there is some shipbuilding in connection with it—formerly Stromness was the great port of the Hudson's Bay fleet. The view is taken from the north, looking across the Sound to the opposite cliffs of Hoy. About six miles distant is the sepulchral mound and building of Maeshowe, the finest ancient monument in the islands, and certainly of far greater antiquity than the Runic inscriptions which cover its stones, and which appear to have been cut either at or after the plunder of the original tombs.
