Stowe Vermont Artist Walton Blodgett Drawing. 1930s Venice Italy Streetscape

Description: For sale is one of several original graphite drawings by the well regarded New England regional artist Walton Blodgett (1908 - 1963) that we are selling in our eBay Store. Provenance: Clarke Galleries, Stowe Vermont. This drawing features what is most likely a street scene in Venice, Italy. Blodgett spent time in Venice, sketching and painting during a trip to Europe in the 1930’s. Blodgett’s distinct impressionist drawing style is on full display in this artwork. Estate stamped and estate inventory number stamp on verso. Gallery framed and matted under glass. Condition: The overall image with a yellow tinted hue. More prominent on the left upper side. Unsure if this was intentional aquatint but it doesn’t look like normal yellowing with age. Please see detailed pictures for consideration. Otherwise overall Good with some foxing to the matting edge (see pics). The black gallery frame with normal handling scuffs. Measurements: Framed - 17 1/4” x 15 1/4” Sight Size - 11” x 8” Walton Blodgett received his artistic training in New York City at the Grand Central School of Art, and later with George Luks. His earliest works were stark depictions of New York City skyscrapers. During the summers of 1928-30, he studied with George Pierce Ennis in Maine, and it was then that he developed his interest in watercolors and landscapes. In 1936, he was employed by the U.S. government to paint in Key West, Florida. In 1941, he relocated to Stowe, Vermont, where he was able to pursue his interest in depicting the natural beauty of that state. He died in Stowe in 1963.
