Kaufman transformed pop art from a focus on ordinary objects to a medium addressing social issues. Even as a child, he was exceptionally precocious, holding his first art show at his synagogue at just eight years old. Works from that show now hang in the Jewish Holocaust Memorial in Brooklyn, New York. At age 12, Kaufman gained his first commercial success when Macy’s in New York City commissioned him to paint custom pet rocks. He continued to sell his art throughout his teenage years before enrolling at Parsons School of Design.Kaufman met pop art pioneer Andy Warhol at Studio 54, and the two developed a close professional relationship, with Kaufman working as Warhol's assistant at his studio, The Factory. Warhol’s influence on Kaufman is evident in his use of media, including sculpture, photography, stained glass, mixed media, and film. However, Kaufman is best known for his vibrant paintings and prints, often featuring unconventional subjects like Mercedes Benz cars and Formula One race cars, as well as portraits of celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe, and Jackie Kennedy. His screen print series of Cohiba cigars remains among his most popular works.Early American pop art often turned everyday objects into art but was criticized for being impersonal. Kaufman, however, infused his work with a strong social message, pioneering a more humanistic approach to pop art. A major advocate for AIDS awareness, racial equality, and homelessness prevention, he used his art to promote these causes. One of his notable works is a large 5-by-5-foot canvas featuring Trojan condoms, symbolizing his activism for safe sex. Beyond his artwork, he donated time and money to environmental causes, anti-gang initiatives, and programs to feed the hungry.Technically, Kaufman also innovated within the pop art genre. While traditional pop artists relied on screen printing, Kaufman personalized this process by adding unique elements to each print in a series, making each one distinct. This approach increased the value of each piece and introduced elements of mixed media to printmaking. His unique techniques and social consciousness set him apart from other contemporary pop artists.Steve Kaufman passed away in 2010 at only 49. Despite his short career, he produced an extraordinary body of work, and his art continues to be celebrated worldwide, with his paintings and prints displayed in museums and private collections globally.Check out our store: https://www.ebay.com/str/geendantreasures100% Guaranteed to be as described.
