Description: Steamboats Midnight Race On The Mississippi 10.5" Currier & Ives Plate Adams NY Offered for your consideration is this Antique Lithographic 10.5" Dinner Plate of 2 Steamboats Racing on the Mississippi. This is one of a series of Mississippi River scenes produced by the New York printers Currier & Ives after drawings from life by Frances "Fanny" Palmer. The image depicts a famous race between the paddle ships Natchez and Eclipse, of which Eclipse was the eventual winner. The ships, bellowing plumes of steam and smoke into the moonlit sky, race along the lower reaches of the River. This is what's called a transferware plate and was hand tinted with color before glazing. The border carries pink and yellow roses & wild roses. Condition....mint. Weight: 1 lb 8.0 oz. "NATCHEZ" (Vicksburg, Natchez & New Orleans Mail Line) was 301.5 ft long and weighed 1,547 tons. "ECLIPSE" took shape in 1852 in New Albany, IN.
