Description: StanisławSzukalski, Tatuaż - znak Potopu/Tattoo - a mark of the Deluge,KontrowersPublishing House, Gliwice 2022 Author:Stanisław SzukalskiTitle:"Tattoo - a mark of the Deluge"Publisher:Wydawnictwo KontrowersYearof release: 2022Condition:New Thebook "Tattoo - a mark of the Deluge" is based on theoriginal theories of Stanisław Szukalski (1893-1987), a Polishsculptor, theoretician, enthusiast of anthropology, ethnography, linguistics and semiotics, as well as a philosopher and heretic, called in the United States "forgotten genius", about inwhich Leonardo Di Caprio produced a famous documentary in 2018entitled “Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski” (dir.Irek Dobrowolski).Throughouthis long life, Stanisław Szukalski not only sculpted and created hisbrilliant artistic works, he was also active as a teacher("Twórcownia" and the artistic group "Szczep RogateSerce"), publisher (leaflets, proclamations, "Krak"magazine), writer and publicist (stage play "Krak, syn Ludoli",story "Niemy Śpiewak/The Mute Singer"). He was also aproponent of original and utopian socio-political ideas, such as theYouth Union or Neuropa. After the outbreak of World War II, Szukalski emigrates to the USA and slowly walks away from artistic life. He wasthen absorbed in research work on his own theory of Zermatism, towhich he devoted the rest of his life (he left about 40 volumes ofhis typescripts, richly illustrated by himself and never published). In his opinion, it was a science explaining the origins of man andthe beginnings of all civilizations, which he saw in commondenominators, such as the proto-language ("Protong", or"Macimowa" in Polish) or the historical post-flood trauma, present in all cultures, religions and mythologies of the world.“Tattoo– a markof the Deluge” is a book that actually looks at one of the threadsof Zermatism, namely the phenomenon of ethnic tattoo, known on allcontinents, to which Szukalski devoted a lot of attention anddedicated one volume. In its pages, the author presents cartoonportraits and silhouettes of tattooed representatives of varioustribes and cultures from around the world and, in his own unique way, explains the meaning and genesis of their tattoos, scarification andother methods of body decoration. Of course, in the context of theGreat Flood and the repeated symbols everywhere and the similarity oftheir meanings.Tomake it easier for the reader to understand this complex content, wedecided to invite Szukalski's biographer, prof. Lechosław Lameńskiand dr hab. Krzysztof Jaskuła, a linguist and translator who hasworked with Szukalski's texts many times and captivated us with histranslation of a beautiful story by Szukalski, entitled "TheMute Singer". We decided to entrust the contribution to thecreation of this book to the best specialists in the country, forwhom the person and work of Stach from Warta are not just a topic forshallow reflections in search of sensation, but a pretext for veryinteresting discussions about art and its rich history. Therefore, for all those who come across Szukalski's name for the first time,Lechosław Lameński wrote a short essay with a biography of theartist and a review of his most important sculptural projects.Krzysztof Jaskuła, as a translator, philologist and linguist, created a very interesting polemic with Szukalski's main linguistictheses. Without his comment, our edition would be incomplete anddevoid of a punchline. Piotr Wojciechowski, the founder of the TattooMuseum and the publisher of this publication, introduced andexplained the origins of the book.
