Description: Victorian Child's Brown Aesthetic Transferware Tea Plate LITTLE MAE with PETS Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890 This is a playful child's transferware plate, circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the plate measures about 5 inches in diameter. The decoration is transfer printed in chocolate brown or sepia. The piece depicts the ever popular child named Little Mae sometimes spelled May, sitting on a doorstep with her trusty dog, a cat on her lap and a kitten lapping up milk from a saucer beside her. There are birds all around her, and the scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies, with little peaches in the border trim. It is marked 'Staffordshire England'. The pattern is Allerton's registration number 106741 and pattern number 780. Charles Allerton was a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little Mae with Pets" of "Little May". The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Haphazardly made in a Friday afternoon folk art style, the plate has stilt marks firing stretch marks and other minor manufacturing flaws typical of the period and original to the making, adding to the quirky charm of these wares. Only minor discoloration on the back side; the front is clean and crisp. A great example of naive and whimsical early wares! Sold as is. Children's aesthetic transferware in this fun pattern is highly sought after, and animal lovers love it.
