Description: ST MICHAEL SLAYS ANTI-CHRIST MONEY-LENDER. LARGE ORTHODOX ICON. 23.5"X15" A huge heavy icon of a rarely depicted Christian scene painted traditionally, tempera on canvas on solid wood. St Michael (or Archangel Michael, or Mikaèl to the Eastern church) is depicted stomping on the Anti-Christ villain as he is about to slay him. The usurer or "Loan Shark" was the meanest and most evil of all medieval citizens. They were blood-thirsty devil worshipers and were helped by Satan's demons, as he is pictured about to die surrounded by the devil's helpers. Meticulously painted, it is a very large bright, bold, colourful solid wooden icon on one single slab of very thick hard wood. Halos were done with gold leaf. Examine the scene and all photographs carefully. Weight: 9.7-lbs From Eastern Europe.
