Scratches are less of a concern when grading the sound quality of a CD verses a vinyl record. A lightly scratched vinyl record surface degrades the sound of a vinyl record. CD's are different. Even a heavily scratched CD will play well as long as the laser can see through the underside and read the digital information burned into the backside of the label. In some extreme cases the clear polycarbonate may have a scratch so bad (gouge) that it disturbs the laser, in which case over sampling will fill-in the missing information. Most people cannot hear interpolation. The clear polycarbonate underside is there, by design, to act as a protective layer over the digital information. If the label is scratched through then the digital information will be lost. Evaluating the condition of the label is more important than the clear underside. Shipped in pro-quality CD mailer.
