Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) SOUTHWELL. Southwell, now far surpassed in magnitude by Nottingham and other places of more modern growth, is a very interesting and ancient town. Some date it back to Ad Pontem, a station of the Romans, and Bede records the baptism here of Paulinus in the seventh century. It was a favourite residence of the Archbishops of York, and its most interesting features are the noble Minster, and the ruins of the Archbishops' Palace hard by. Several Archbishops of York are buried in the Minster, the last being Archbishop Sandys, who died here in 1588. This structure has suffered somewhat at the hands of restorers, but it still may be said that "few finer examples of a great Norman building, so dignified in its grand simplicity, remain to us in England."
