Title: Antique Khmer Bronze Multi-Armed Deity Ganesha. Angkor Wat ‘Bayon’ Style. 19/20th Century. Description: An extremely rare and important Hindu divinity figure, acquired from a Khmer Temple site in the Siem Reap province of northern Cambodia, a superbly cast example of the elephant-headed deity from Hindu literature and mythology, portrayed as an idol with the body of a man and the head of an elephant, having only one tusk, intricately modeled in traditional Khmer ‘Bayon’ style, depicted dancing precariously on a lotus base. The figures hands are rich in symbols of gesture while simultaneously holding attributes in each of his hands. In the lower right-hand he holds his own broken tusk, and the lower-left hand he holds a delicacy, a ball of rice flour which he samples with his trunk. In the two hands behind him, he holds the Pasha (noose) in the upper left hand, while the upper right hand holds an axe. Ganesha's sacred thread, the divine serpent ‘Upavita’, is coiled in the form of a beaded necklace about his torso. He is shown unclothed above the waist, exposing his large pot belly practically falling over his garment, wearing a knee-length 'Chawng Khun' wrap, secured by lengths of pleated fabric forming a draping pendant sash, complemented by a central panel at the back of his garment. Ganesha's well-proportioned head is beautifully modeled with exacting detail, rendered with almond shaped eyes, broken tusks, trunk whorled to the left, and large ears resting on his shoulders. He wears tightly matted braided hair bound by an inter-connected 'Diadem' crown, rising to a conical-shaped headdress, and topped by a bulbous ornament. The deity dances on a small round plinth, decorated with a single row of lotus petals.Condition Report: Sculpted in the form of a standing image, the figure was primarily cast from a special process of 'smelting' metal, obtained from the melting of sacred metals and religious artifact fragments in accordance with the Buddhist Scripture. The primary ingredients here being copper with the possibility of small amounts of tin and brass.
