Description: South-Western and Arkansas Mining Company Stock Certificate – 1849 Offered for your consideration is a small stock certificate issued by a mining company two days after Christmas in 1849. This particular document features no vignette or principal design element, just the amount of text necessary to convey the required information. Headlined “SOUTH-WESTERN AND ARKANSAS MINING COMPANY / CERTIFICATE OF STOCK”, this piece announces the purchase of 10 shares of stock, “No. 101 to 110”, for the sum of “$1000 00/100”. The body of the document reads “Be it known, That Oron D. Moulton is entitled to TEN SHARES, of One Hundred Dollars each, of the Capital Stock of the SOUTH-WESTERN AND ARKANSAS MINING COMPANY, which said shares are transferable only on the Books of said Company.”. This is followed by the location, “Little Rock”, and the date, “Decr. 27th 1849”, as well as the signatures of “Tho. W. Newton” and “Geo A Worthen” in their capacities as “Pres’t” and “Secretary”, respectively. The left end features a small, rectangular box, within which is printed “Ten Shares”, while the opposite end bears a similar design, only with “1000 Dollars” printed within. All of the foregoing elements are enclosed in a decorative border, composed of small half-circles. The back features a partly-printed transfer form. This form is completed on the offered specimen and states the “For value received I hereby transfer this Certificate of Stock to Moses Greenwood and authorize the transfer to be made on the Books of the Company, on presentation of this Certificate.”. This followed by the admonition to “Witness my hand, this (?) day of January 1850”, with the signature of “O. D. Moulton” at the conclusion. The remainder of the back is blank. The document was produced by “Democrat, Print, Little Rock”, as evidenced by their imprint at the lower right below the border. An interesting little mining document from an area generally not associated with that type of operation. One wonders if the men involved in this enterprise were called forty-niners. Cursory research indicates that silver, lead, and zinc were discovered along Kellogg Creek in 1840, and a mine was opened by the South-Western and Arkansas Mining Company, under a lease from Benjamin Kellogg. This initial mine was followed by several additional mines, all of which had ceased operations by 1852. In the period from 1848-49, the ores from the Kellogg mine was shipped down the Arkansas and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, and from there to Wales and Liverpool. During this time, it appears that approximately 500 tons of lead-silver concentrate were drawn from the mines. The Confederates mined in the area until it was taken by the Union forces in mid-September, 1863, after which the mine installations were destroyed. Periodic attempts to resume production yielded little in the way of profits, and most operations lasted only a year or two. The final effort was begun in 1923, and closed four years later. The presently offered certificate exhibits signs of period use, as well as less than ideal long-term storage. Toning is present across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a tan to light brown hue, somewhat darker at the edges. This toning is exacerbated by the type of paper employed (sometimes called onionskin), it being extremely thin and reactive to the period ink. This reaction has caused ink corrosion to all of the manuscript additions, with some paper missing among the letters (this is the reason that the date of the transfer cannot be determined on the back) and all material visible from both sides. The edged are irregular, though no significant issues are seen. Several folds are noted, the most serious horizontally bisecting the piece. Newton’s signature has been “X” cut cancelled, whether at the time of transfer or redemption is unknown. Measuring approximately 5½ x 8⅝ inches, this piece would frame nicely with an illustration of the mining area, whether period or modern. An interesting little item to add to your collection. A $5.95 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance. A $5.00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
