Description: This elegant little goldtone dress clip has "University of Pittsburgh" and its founding date of 1787 surrounding a design of rays of light coming from a lit candle. The patent number on the back dates from 1932. The candle is not the school's crest, but I've seen this design on some older school items. There's a tradition that started for women students in 1920, when alumnae passed lighted candle lanterns to students symbolizing the light of knowledge. The tradition continues though with different lights and is now open to all students. The dress clip is 1 inch at the widest and 1 1/8 inches high. It's in good condition.
