Description: SIGNIFICANT HARRY TRUMAN SIGNED PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTMENT OF JOHN STEELMAN. Up for auction is very significant and original Harry Truman signed autographed 1946 Presidential Appointment ,that on June 26,1946 ,John R. Steelman of Alabama was to serve as “ Director of War Mobilization and Reconversion for term of two years “ . However , less than 6 months later on December 12, 1946 , Mr Steelman was the first person to serve as “ The Assistant to the President of the United States” , in the administration of President Harry S. Truman from 1946 to 1953. The office later became the White House Chief of Staff. John Steelman was the only White House Chief of Staff to serve the full term of a president. He also holds the record for the longest term as Chief of Staff at six years. The Harry Truman signed and autographed Presidential Appointment has a nice bold signature on the document., The signature of Dean Acheson, United States Acting Secretary of State also appears on the document with the official seal affixed on the lower left that is fully intact. The Harry Truman Presidential Appointment Document is in fine condition and is large in size . It measures approximately 23” long and 19 “ high which would be very impressive if it’s framed and hung on the wall. The Harry Truman Signed Document comes with a Letter of Authenticity from the Beckett Authentication Services Experts : Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero. The document is encased in archival plastic sheets. On the upper left corner on the plastic sheet there is a label that was previously removed. This doesn’t appear on the document itself. Although this document is partially printed and written on sturdy old world type parchment paper I chose not to remove it from its archival sheets to take photos so it would be protected from any mishandling . The document is clean of any marks or scratches. The photos taken have reflections from the plastic covering on the document. Their is a very mild aging of the document. Historical Footnotes on John R. Steelman ( June 23, 1900 - July 14, 1999) John R. Steelman was a onetime hobo from Arkansas who later earned a Ph. D. In economics and became one of President Harry S.Truman’s closest aides. With official title of assistant to President (White House Chief of Staff) Besides his job as the assistant to the president, his biggest job in the Truman administration according to David McCullough the author of “Truman “ was probably negotiating a 52 day strike by steelworkers in 1952, the longest and costliest in United States history. After President Truman left office,Dr.Steelman stayed for several weeks to help President Dwight D. Eisenhower with the transition. He later held positions in corporate America. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Steelman once told colleagues in Washington about his hobo days, I’ve been written up Hobo Journal as one of “one of our boys who made good “ he said.
