About the Book:This is a multigenerational saga/novel that depicts the lives of two families of Teton Sioux from the late 1700s to the 1830s, before the arrival of the white man. It includes family tree endpapers, idiomatic phrases (from Lakota to English), and a glossary of Lakota words used in the book. $14.95 price is present on the front flap. Yuha is the "language collaborator" for the book, and is pictured on the rear flap of the jacket. Author, Hill was 66 when "Hanta Yo" was published by Doubleday in 1979, a project she began in 1951 and worked on for nearly thirty years. From a young age, Hill was passionate about Native American culture. Between 1951 and 1954, she conducted extensive research in local libraries but eventually realized she needed firsthand experience. She traveled to Native American reservations, interviewing over a thousand Native Americans and immersing herself in their culture and environment. In a Smithsonian article, she warned against superficial approaches to research, emphasizing the importance of genuine interaction. During the last fourteen years of the project, bilingual Native American musician Chunksa Yuha joined Hill, helping her understand the Native American "soul." Hill learned the Dakotah (Lakotah) language with Yuha's guidance, benefiting from his knowledge, which was untainted by "white schooling." "Hanta Yo," meaning "clear the way" in Dakotah, tells the story of a Teton Sioux tribe resisting white influence between 1750-1834. Hill's novel reflects her deep concern for the preservation of Native American culture, driven by genuine passion rather than a desire for success or recognition. I read it back in the late 80's and have been ruined for a good fiction book ever since. I compare every book I ever read to this one and 99.99% of them fall short. The story of how the book came to be written is fascinating in itself. For those of you that don't know, this book is an actual history of a tribe of Lakota, Sioux. It seems that many years ago an elder in the tribe had a 100-winter count. These were pieces of leather/animal skins with drawings that recorded significant events of the tribe that year. The elder greatly wanted to find someone who would help him bridge the gap of understanding between the white man and the Sioux and his idea was to write a book, using the 100 year count of his tribe. And so the elder began started searching for an author. But most of the authors that came to him wanted a “tell it to me” story where they merely acted as a scribble. None of the authors showed a passion or genuine interest in learning the Sioux ways or of being the instrument of understanding between the white man and the Sioux nation. Finally, after a very long search Ruth Beebe Hill came to the elder, interested in writing the story of the 100 winter count, and she stayed on to live with the tribe. She lived with them for years. She learned their language, participated in all of their ceremonies, lived as they lived, studied with them, and was eventually adopted by them. Her loves for the Sioux was evident in her commitment to truly understand them. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. If you are Native American or just want to know more about them, this book is a must read!!! You will laugh, cry, gasp, and be blown away by this true story. Ruth Beebe Hill succeeds beyond belief with this book.--Kimberly 5/5 Stars - Both sad and uplifing in the most epic of ways!I came across this book when my mother took a cultural anthropology course, and brought it home as required reading. She had a tough time getting into it, and since I am an avid reader, she gave it to me so I could give her an idea of what it was about. Because the text was translated into the Lakota/Dakota language, and then translated back into English, the organization of the sentences seems awkward at first. However, once you get used to it, you realize that you are entering into a world few have seen or experienced. I became completely engrossed in the story of these people. It is deeply involving, and both sad and uplifing in the most epic of ways. I highly recommend this book to anyone with more than a passing interest in Native American culture, and also anyone seeking insight into human nature in general. An amazing document which represents decades of research and involvement in Plains Indian culture, as well as a rip roaring story that rivals any soap or drama you care to mention. Well worth the effort!--Kelly 5/5 Stars - Hanta Yo should be read by all Americans, as invaders who destroyed a way of life! This book was recommended by my sister Sue who read every book on Native Americans she could find. Hanto Yo was her hands down favorite and she convinced me to read it. Although not a topic I was originally interested in, within a few pages I was hooked, hoping never to leave this wonderful world. Hanta Yo should be read by all Americans, as invaders who destroyed a way of life of an entire continent of people, we owe them, at the very least the understanding of what they lost. This is not a sad book of loss though, this is an exciting book of life. It is one of my all time favorite books.--Sandy Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
