María Cristina Quirós Calvo (Sister Maria de la Salette) was surrounded by art since her childhood. Her father was a painter and at the age of 12 she was already a student of the master Francisco Amighetti. She decided to enroll in Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica were she was an outstanding student. Her teacher Don Manuel de la Cruz González had praise for Sister Maria and dedicated an article in Pórtico to his former student: “…when comparing the artistic work of Sister Maria de la Salette we are faced with an incredible will to do, with an anxious restlessness that drives her to the inexorable, to search and to overcome… Sister Maria’s plastic eclecticism comes from her unconformable anxiety, from her inescapable desire to rise up to the Creator and like Fra Angelico, from her mystical purity and her Faith, thus captured in the eternal soul of an artist, she condemns herself to eternal dissatisfaction, free from accommodating conformisms before her work, for the conquest of new facts and paths between whose cracks her thirst to express herself overflows.” At the age of 22, she made the decision to begin her religious training. In several interviews, she was clear in stating that she never regretted her decision to give her life to religion: "I live happily with God. It is true that one deprives oneself of many things, but with great pleasure." Sister Maria de la Salette was a brave woman who created her work in a sincere manner, with passion and care, at a time when abstraction was just beginning to gain popularity. Her abstract work is very lyrical with a certain musicality in which the strokes seem like notes on a staff, full of force and movement. ___________________________________ ATTENTION!
