The letter speaks of Robert E. lee as well as an enclosed circular about the newly published Adam Lindsay Gordon Memorial Volume and three Commonwealth commemorative stamps. Ballarat Victoria Australia 15th September 1927 Dr. George Bolling Lee c/o Plaza Hotel New York City United States of America Dear Dr. Lee 2 Enclosures I have directed the publishers To forward you a copy of the Adam Lindsay Gordon Memorial Volume. It is a tribute from an Australian to the memory of your grandfather Gen Robert E Lee my admiration for whom it would be difficult to express in words. Your family must have received tributes of admiration for him from all over the world & I trust that this book will be accepted & kept with that understanding. The enclosed circular will explain about the volume better than I can. Only 1000 copies have been issued. We Australians consider “How We beat the Favorite” as the finest bit of galloping poetry ever written. The “Sick Stockrider” and “The ride from the Wreck” are typical Australian poems. Personally I am very fond of his sea poems such as the “Swimmer” and the “Song of the Surf.” However you will have an opportunity of judging them for yourself. I should be glad of an acknowled gment when the book comes to hand. Less than three months ago our young commonwealth established its federal capital. A commonwealth stamp was issued to celebrate that event. I secured a few & have pleasure in enclosing three herewith. I have been twice in Virginia though my visits were very short but I had the privilege of meeting some of the Veterans of the Civil War. Yours faithfully, Newton Wanliss Enclosures 1 – Three commonwealth comm- emorative stamps 2 – Circular re Adam Lindsay Gordon Memorial Volume. The letter is in Very Good condition: has been folded three times, shows minor fading, lacks envelope. I have other signed material and antiquarian books for sale and would gladly combine on shipping. Any questions, feel free to ask. Thank you.
