Rather than torture the cloth with darts and pinches and tugs to make it show off the body inside, a handful of designers loved the cloth and let the cloth love the wearer. Shirin Guild was among the early British makers of liquid, oversized slices of astonishing materials – I see her as the godmother of Eskandar. If you look at her pieces as they’re worn, you see the fabric being allowed to be its best self and with the silks, linens, woolens that were around in the UK, these initially homely pieces simply shimmer with natural energy. There are others, Dusan and Zoran lavished in fabrics from Italy, and Ronaldus Shamask went from hard tailoring to some of the most magical bias cuts ever as he surrendered to the cloth. But Shirin Guild was special in that she worked in a vacuum. These ideas are hers. Yards and yards of medium weight wool flannel went into this, a cloth firm enough to hold its shape. It is unlined and the inner seams are carefully finished so there’s no raw. It is cut to have seams, vertical and horizontal that define its shape. Large side seam style but horizontal pockets with large openings that would droop but for a bit of Velcro in the center of each. The back does not have a center seam, instead, a horizontal seam adds a wide strip with a pleat at center back. An astonishing 39” across the back at the underarms, approx. waist and so on. 29” long nape to hem. 40” across the shoulders and sleeves are 11” long. It’s 28” from the wrist to the collar.
