How to replace Blade on Great Northern Shave Ice and Similar Machines Please read through the entire instructions and make sure they apply to your machine. Since the machines may be actually made by different manufacturers the steps may actually be a little different. Use extreme caution because old and replacement Blades are very Sharp! While it is possible to replace the blade without removing the base it is strongly recommended that the base be removed as it is safer and easier to replace the blade if the base is off the machine. 1) Remove the adjustment knob by completely turning counterclockwise until it comes out. 2) Loosen the two fly nuts underneath the base plate to free the two clips holding the plate to the machine. 3) Remove the base plate by rotating the clips and lift up the base plate from the machine. 4) The blade should be protruding from the base so before you turn it upside down make sure you protect your work surface before the next step. 5) Place a wood block or similar object to keep blade from touching the work surface and turn the base plate upside down on the block. 6) Remove the three screws and washers and remove the old blade noting the orientation of the blade position. Be careful because the stock screws can be stripped easily!* 7) Install the new blade with the same orientation with the three screws and washers. Tighten lightly. Alignment of Blade 8) It is important for the blade be aligned so that it is not at an angle when it is raised. To do these reinstall the adjustment knob and turn it clockwise till the blade is below the plate. Turn the plate right side up and slowly turn the adjustment knob until the blade just rises above the base plate. If the blade is at the same level all across tighten the three screws and you are done. If the blade protrudes unevenly loosen the screws enough so you can push, FROM THE DULL BOTTOM, the blade until it is all the same level to the base plate.Tighten the three screws. Recheck and adjust if necessary. 9) Remove the adjustment knob as in step (1). 10) Reinstall the base plate to the machine to its approximate normal position. Rotate the clips in position but do not fully tighten yet 11) Screw in the Adjustment knob through the machine base to the base assembly. You may have to rotate the base a little to find the right position. Move the clips in position and tighten the two fly nuts to secure the base plate to the machine. Congratulations, you are done! * I would suggest replacing the three screws with stainless steel screws with an allen wrench head. The size should be 5mm screw, 10mm long and a 3mm allen wrench head. The actual size might vary on your machine so you should make sure they fit. It will be much easier to remove and re-tighten in the future.
