It also contains a roster of the troops in the Palmetto Sharpshooter Regiment, with detailed Civil War service information on each soldier, including a transcription of his service record. The roster is alphabetical for easy use. The Palmetto Sharpshooters Regiment was organized in April 1862. It was known by names such as 1st Regiment of Palmetto Sharpshoorters, the Palmetto Regiment of Sharpshooters, the 1st Regiment of South Carolina Sharpshooters, and Jenkins's Palmetto Regiment of Sharpshooters. One unique thing about the Palmetto Sharpshooters is that they were made up entirely of companies that were from other military units that were reenlisting in their service to the war. These companies came from infantry units such as the 4th, 5th and 9th South Carolina Infantries under Colonel Micha Jenkins and was assigned to Anderson’s Brigade, Longstreet’s Division in Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The Palmetto Sharpshooters were sent to Virginia, where they fought in the Siege of Yorktown, Seven Pines, the battle of Gaines Mill, Frayser’s Farm, Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and during the Suffolk Expedition. Ordered with Longstreet to Tennessee, the unit fought at Wauhatchie, Campbell Station, during the Siege of Knoxville, at Fort Sanders, Bean’s Station, Dandridge, Strawberry Plains, before returning to Virginia. Upon return, it fought in the battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, and during the Petersburg siege. If fought at 2nd Deep Bottom Run, Halifax Road (2nd Reams Station), Fort Harrison, Darbytown Rod, 2nd Darby town Road, Williamsburg Road, new Market heights, and during the retreat to Appomattox. The regiment surrendered on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox Court House. This first edition book is brand new, unread, and in pristine condition.
